SHORT DESCRIPTION

On 27 June 2019 the Alzheimer Cafè has been inaugurated in terni the first café in Umbria region dedicated to families and caregivers of people with dementia from Terni city.

Alzheimer Cafè is an itinerant project promoted by Auser Terni, with fortnightly meetings that will take place in public places in the city with the aim of breaking down the social stigma that weighs on cognitive problems related to Alzheimer’s disease and avoid the isolation of those who daily he takes care of the needs of people with dementia. The project has been also supported by local Health Units, private Helzeimer associations and geriatricians.

Alzheimer Cafè  is a safe place where people with dementia, their families and professional carers can meet in an informal way and spend a few hours in a welcoming and listening-centered atmosphere.

WHY HAS IT BEEN SELECTED AS A BEST PRACTICE?

Alzheimer Cafés are meeting places for the sick and family members, usually located in the assistance centers or at the Local health Units, where community life can be done.

Alzheimer Cafes allow family members to exchange experiences, give advice, let off steam, and it is also a way to make sick people do some social life, certainly a good practice that generates good experiences !! It a good practice because it is easy transferrable and created in different country. In fact more than 60 café exist in Netherland, and many other have been opened in Belgium, Italy, Greece, etc.

There are not, as the name would initially suggests, merely social get togethers’ in a café style environment, but rather the careful combination and structuring of multiple levels of education and support offered within  the context of a low threshold, understanding environment in the presence of health care professionals, persons with dementia and their family and friends.
